Who it's for
- You own a roof-mounted, window, or side-draft swamp cooler and want to take care of it yourself.
- You'd like the season-start, mid-season, and winterizing steps in one place, as checklists you can print.
- You want to know which jobs are reasonable to do yourself and which ones need an electrician or HVAC tech.
Who it's probably not for: if you already follow your cooler's manual every season and know your bleed-off rate and belt tension, most of this will be familiar. It's also not a repair manual for refrigerated A/C or for commercial systems.
What's inside
- How your cooler works. Wet-bulb temperature, why it struggles in humid weather, and why it needs an open window.
- Safety first. Shutting off power and water, plus ladder and roof safety based on OSHA's ladder guidance.
- Season-start, mid-season, and winterizing checklists. Printable, with checkboxes.
- Pads and media. When to replace, aspen vs. rigid media, and a pad-size table.
- Water, bleed-off, and scale. Setting the float, why bleed-off matters in hard-water areas, and how to read your water report.
- Troubleshooting table. Pump, float, belt, and motor problems, the likely causes, and what to do.
- Running it well. Airflow, relief openings, thermostat settings, and using less water.
- When to call a pro. Clear signs that a job is past DIY.
- Sizing a replacement cooler. Worked through with the same formula our free calculator uses.
- Maintenance log and glossary.
Where the information comes from
Every technical point is cited in the text to its source: manufacturer manuals (MasterCool, Champion/Essick Air, Phoenix Manufacturing, Breezair, Portacool), University of Arizona Cooperative Extension, the U.S. Department of Energy and PNNL, the New Mexico Office of the State Engineer, USGS, NOAA's National Weather Service, and OSHA. A full source list is at the back. When sources disagree (belt tension, for example), the handbook gives both numbers and tells you to follow your own manual.
What it isn't
General information, not professional advice. It doesn't replace your cooler's manual or local codes, and it doesn't cover electrical work beyond telling you when to call an electrician.
